Devastating news
Sunday, June 10, 2007

Wad devastating news I got. Two blows in one day. Yes, console me, I am devastated and depressed. At least for now, when I jus got the news 6hrs.

A routine checkup for his bad breath, for his gums problem found someting....
My MaoMao have got FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). Indeed, it is the cat's version of HIV. No doubt. It sounded like it, and IS it.

To me, it felt like, my own relative being diagnosed with a terminal illness. To me, that is how much Maomao matters to me. Indeed, Maomao matters to me tis much. I can jus, dun go work jus to see my cat to vet. If I have money, the first ting I buy, is stuff for my cat. I can dun eat fancy food, and jus, spend my last cent on my cat. Sorry for those who tink its silly to treat an animal with such passion, and for those who cant comprehend why I m feeling so sad bout it. To me, Maomao is not jus a pet, not jus a cat, not my kids, but definitely someone who matters so much to me.

Nope, its nt deadly. Neither is FIV immediate death causing. Vet advised that FIV-negative cats be kept apart from FIV-positive cats as it is believed that the virus can be spread via sharing of food bowl, water bowls. And she believes that cats diagnosed with FIV has an average expected lifespan of 8years. She further believes that however, 50% of the cats live normal life although the feline are FIV-positive. Based on wad I told her, she believes Maomao contacted FIV when he was a stray, before he was adopted by me. I adopted Maomao and had him for 5-6years. You do the maths on his possible expected lifespan remaining.

This piece of news also means...Mewmew has to leave. And the two cats are (preferably) not to come in contact again...

I've so got used to having Mewmew, he is like my son to me..and..now, I jus found that my maomao has this terminal illness, and mewmew cant stay anymore. I cant have another cat too, until maomao passes on.. Its jus so..devastating to me..

Reading up further on FIV however presented a different light on the virus. It is read that the virus is fragile and cannot be spread from sharing of drinking bowls because it cant survive in the water. Spreading to other cats within the house is not likely too, unless the cats bite each other, since FIV is usually spread from one cat to another via deep biting wounds. Cats are usually living as per normal even with FIV.

So..how? who to believe?

For now, I jus need some time to get over tis. Cancer is still...ok...curable but everyone noes HIV is not curable..tel me, hw to b indifferent.

Oh, fellow cats owners with unsterilized roaming cats, Beware...

**Added**
We decided to have mew with us..
And permanently, Mew is our family member le..Official...Got is PR from my mum... :D
We decided that taking care to seperate their food, ensuring no exchange of body fluid...chances of mewmew living a longer life at my place is higher cos back there..he will be exposed to fiv too, if he gets into fight with other cats...and...if fiv dun kill him, fights mite...anyway, my family love the cats..so... Yep~ I m nt tt sad after all ~
